Newsletter No. 6: CAREER DESTROYING MANUEVER #319

Some bands, well let's put it this way, some bands know what's good for them. OXBOW, well let's put it this way: if we knew what was good for us, OXBOW would never have ever crawled into existence.

I mean I would have never even seriously considered, for a second, that plot to murder an ex-lover's husband.

I would have never even seriously considered, for a second, using a passel of pharmaceuticals to build obscene amounts of body muscle.

I would have never even seriously considered, for a second, that lying, cheating and stealing is a viable lifestyle choice.

I would have never even seriously considered, for a second, spending any time at all sobbing with a pistol in my mouth.

I mean I'm not saying we've done these things. I'm just saying that if there's a way to blow it, we've blown it.

We've insulted friends, enemies, supporters and those in an actual position to "help our careers." I'm not saying that we don't care about OXBOW as a career. I'm just saying that we've comfortably acknowledged that it's easier to embrace failure than it is to try to succeed. And so we succeed by failing and that involves acts of colossal, counter-intuitiveness.

  Welcome to #319.

It's a request from a Public Relations copy to answer questions from our upcoming show involving ZENI GEVA, NEUROSIS, SHELLAC, MICHAEL GIRA and a host of other middling talents that include OXBOW.

Anyway.

  Answers Below.

Hi, everyone. Here's the email interview for the SF weekly. Please returnyr answers to me ASAP, they are on deadline.

>Sorry, Jessica: I've been kinda sitting on these questions, but they do need to go out ASAP, I suppose. Forward the following text to everyone you have email for (except for Neurosis and Shellac, of course). We'll go from there.

>Hi there, Neurot Sound Series participants. My name is Mike Rowell, and Iím writing a preview of the 'Beyond the Pale' shows of Aug. 16-19 for the San Francisco Weekly. Iíd like to get quotes from as many of the artists involved as possible, and the most expedient way of doing that is via email. So if you could answer the open-ended questions below, I'd greatly appreciate it. Elaboration is encouraged, with bonus points given for creativity. I apologize for the generic nature of these questions; follow-up queries may be sent to individual artists. Hope to hear from you soon. with many thanks, Mike

  >1. How did you come to be involved in the Neurot Sound Series Festival?

One of OXBOW's more singular pursuits is the whole right time-right place obsession. And of course we're equally obsessed with its inverse. So between the right time and the wrong place we managed to be on the receiving end of a "phone call" (versus say "a gun").

That's how.

  >2. How do you feel your music fits in with the larger scheme of this festival?

I don't think many of us are super-qualified to discuss the larger scheme of the festival at all. Some of us are quite qualified to discuss the music we make. OXBOW however are not especially qualified to do either. So what you're asking is why do we think we were chosen to play this festival. Our answer? Because we're so incredibly fucking handsome. Did you even need to ask?

  > 3. What do you have planned for your performance at the Neurot festival?

Hitler once said "There are three types of secrets: the kind I keep from you, the kind we share and those about things yet to come." Truer words were never spoken.

  > 4. What, in your opinion, unifies the various artists involved?

their dogged insistence on playing music many people would be a lot better off never having heard.

> What sets them apart?

Penis size. Or lack thereof.

  > 5. What are your thoughts on this festival in general

I think the salubrious health benefits of crack cocaine have been sorely undermeasured. In general, this festival will provide us with an opportunity/excuse to more carefully assess exactly what those benefits are.

> and overall?

is there a significant difference between "general" and "overall"?

Overall, OXBOW is happy to be involved in any event that requires both of our hands to be occupied with things other than firearms and thoughts of the systemic uselessness of 99% of what constitutes living on this toilet bowl we call home.

> Why should people check it out?

They shouldn't. They should stay far, far away. I mean if they knew what was good for them. Which they don't. Or they never seem to. Some people are just drawn to trouble--the poison mushroom, the frayed toaster wire, the hitchhiker--these are the ones that you'll find there. Perhaps ask them while they still yet live and see what they say. I'm very sure it will not illuminate the human condition in the slightest.

Do you think it will lead to other, my sincerest hope is that it leads to an orgasm. for SOMEone.

bigger,

see: Orgasm.

better things?

Oh god, no. OXBOW wouldn't know a "better" thing if it shanked them with a sharpened screwdriver and left them bleeding on the street.

  > Feel free to rant at length.

Lazy, lazy fucking journalist...you should not weep but should instead count your blessings. Blessing No.1: OXBOW doesn't know what you look like. Blessing No. 2: If OXBOW doesn't know what you look like it will be MUCH harder to screw your lover when you're at work struggling against deadline to write a shining piece of PR pap. Blessing No. 3: Outside of the fucking your lover, breaking your personal belongings and possibly assaulting you (or someone like you) OXBOW are very personable people.
